The breast is an organ of inestimable value to both the health and the beauty of the individual. As a symbol of femininity, maternity and sexuality, it sits at the core of a woman's sense of "wholeness."
There is much for women to learn if they are to be empowered to maintain optimal breast health. Knowledge is also the individual's most powerful ally if she is forced by circumstance to seek out treatment for illness or injury.
Even when the breast is healthy, developmental anomalies, changes related to aging, pregnancy or past surgery for breast disease, may all prompt a woman to pursue elective surgical refinement of the breasts. In such cases care must be taken to insure that surgery is undertaken only where appropriate, and that its potential impact upon the future health of the breast and upon disease surveillance are taken fully into account.
